Today’s game was going to be a tight one with Alki only four points under AEK they wanted the win to get closer where as AEK wanted a win to claim fifth place over Apollon.
Alki started the game better and created a couple of chances in the first fifteen minutes. AEK then decided to show their skill and started attacking with Murillo cutting from the wing feeding balls in to the attacking half. AEK kept the pressure high and in five minutes managed to score twice with Mrdakovic and Palic to make it 0-2 on the 26th and 31st minute respectively.
Alki didn’t give up and instead got more into the game trying to get a goal that would bring life to their chances again. It only took five minutes for Beckel to get the first goal for the home side and make it 1-2 for half time. What a first half, great Monday night football, non-stop action.
In the second half AEK missed a couple of chances to finish the game with a third goal but still defended well against Alki and kept the score tight at 1-2. Alki never gave up though and with 10 minutes remaining, Sidnei, who keeps impressing with his performances, run down the left wing passed a couple of AEK’s defenders for Fernandes to give Gligorov a tap in and make it 2-2. The remaining 10 minutes were very edgy with both sides trying to grab a winner but it wasn’t meant to be.
A great game and a draw was the fair result even though AEK had a penalty claim in the first half. For the record Mrdakovic scored his seventh of the season and has improved a lot in 2012. AEK was trying to offload him in the January transfer window…I think they’ll thank god they didn’t now!
What’s remarkable and sad is that from both teams, there were no Cypriots in the starting line ups! Only Jason Demetriou who was born and raised in the UK for AEK and Dobracinovic for Alki who became a Cypriot citizen after spending five years in Cyprus. This is a big problem for Cyprus football, the talent is there but it’s not used!
