A local derby for the last eight of the Cyprus Coca Cola Cup. AEK vs Alki in Larnaca. AEK started the game much better with Alex Da Silva coming very close with a shot from distance that was just off target. AEK kept pressuring for a goal where as Kaifas was changing formations for Alki in an attempt to keep the ball in midfield more but AEK was more organized and didn’t let them catch a breath. It took 35 minutes for AEK to get their deserved lead. A lovely ball from the left to Palic who unselfishly passed to Moran who beat the keeper on his second attempt to put them home side 1-0 up.
In the second half Alki was the one attacking more trying to get that very important away goal. AEK on the other hand was happy to sit back and try and counter attack from the wings. The score remained 1-0 to AEK but both teams came close to a goal, especially Alki who were great in the second half and one can say they deserved an equalizer. On the other hand AEK defended very well and go to the second leg with a narrow but important 1-0 advantage.
Teams have met twice before this season with AEK winning the first game 2-0 where as more recently their game finished 2-2 in a game where AEK was 2-0 up and Alki came back to equalize. Let’s hope we see some more of that in the second leg.
